Un roman scris de Charles Dickens, un scriitor englez, ce prezinta evenimentedin viata unui baiat pe parcursul maturizarii lui.
Pip (personajul principal si cel care povesteste actiunea, pe numele de botez Philip) traia impreuna cu sora lui mai mare si sotul acesteia (parintii erau morti) intr-o modesta casa situata la 5 ore de Londra.
Viata lui va fi total schimbata dupa intalnirea cu un evadat si apoi de vizitele saptamanale la domnisoara Havisham, care defapt erao batrana. Aici, la batrana, va intalni o fata de care se va indragosti nebuneste inca de cand era copil, pe numele ei Estella, dar fata nu-i acorda nicio atentie si se comporta fata de el cu superioritate.
